The Faces of AIS: Sophie Grant
At AIS our people are what make us exceptional and what better way to highlight the faces of the business than to delve into their career journey and what tips they have for anyone looking to join the industry.
Sophie Grant
Global Workplace Strategy and Change Consultant
What inspired you to pursue your current career, and how did you get started in this field?
I originally trained as an interior architect before completing a master’s in Space Syntax, which is a scientific methodology that explores how spatial layouts influence human behaviour. That sparked my interest in design strategy and analytics, leading me to roles at several consultancy firms focused on strategic thinking and workplace design.
My core inspiration has always been people and, more specifically, how we interact with space. I’m fascinated by the social implications of design and how environments shape our decisions, behaviours, and experiences.
Who has been the biggest influence on your career path, and why?
During my master’s at the Bartlett School of Architecture, my supervisor, Dr Kerstin Sailer, was a huge influence. She’s an oracle on all things spatial analysis, and certainly inspired my journey into workplace strategy. Nearly a decade later, I’m thrilled to be collaborating with her again on research here at AIS – more on that soon!
What tips would you give to someone just starting in your profession?
Don’t get tunnel vision. As a workplace strategist, it’s easy to focus solely on your immediate environment, but work is a global conversation. Stay curious, stay connected, and engage with international perspectives to remain relevant and bring real value to clients.
Describe an achievement you are most proud of in your time at AIS.
I recently earned my Fitwel Ambassador Certification, a credential that promotes health and well-being in building design. I’m already applying it to client projects, helping create spaces that support physical, mental, and social wellness. It’s rewarding to see how evidence-based design can make a tangible difference.
What do you like best about our company culture?
I love our entrepreneurial spirit. I often feel encouraged to spot opportunities and solve problems creatively. It’s a culture that values initiative and innovation.
What’s a personal aspiration or skill you’re currently working on?
I’m keen to grow my thought leadership and public speaking. Last year, I spoke on a panel at the Business Culture Conference, exploring how workplace environments impact culture and engagement. It was a fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas across disciplines and challenge my own thinking.
How would you describe your team and workplace environment?
The Strategy Team is relentlessly curious. We ask questions and analyse every angle to truly understand our clients. Our goal is to know their organisation better than they do, so we can deliver insights that are both strategic and transformative.
What’s your go-to productivity tip?
Headphones on. The subtle “do not disturb” signal – and it’s backed by research! Music or ambient sound has been proven to help focus, block distractions, boost morale, and get productive.
